How to Sleep Better: 10 Wellness Habits We Bring Into Our Evening Ritual

How to Sleep Better: 10 Wellness Habits We Bring Into Our Evening Ritual

The simple in·reach rituals we love for deeper rest, better recovery, and waking up ready for the day ahead.

We spend so much time looking for the next wellness tool.

A new treatment. A new supplement. A new practice promising more energy, better skin, greater focus, or longevity.

And yet one of the most powerful things we can do for our health has always been within our reach.

Sleep.

At in·reach, we believe that the best things in life are often the simplest. Sleep is one of them.

Our body is the tool through which we get to experience this life. It allows us to move, love, travel, create, work, build, and enjoy everything we're working so hard for.

Taking care of it isn't something to think about only when something feels wrong. It's a daily practice.

And a beautiful place to begin is with the way we end our day.

Here are the 10 sleep habits we love to bring into our evening ritual.

1. Give Sleep the Time It Deserves

We personally love creating space for around eight hours of sleep whenever life allows.

And you can feel the difference the following day.

After a good night's sleep, it's often easier to make better food choices. Your workout feels stronger. You have more energy to move. Your concentration feels sharper, and you're simply better equipped to meet whatever the day brings.

A good morning often begins the night before.

2. Breathe Your Way Into Rest

One of our favorite breathing techniques before sleep comes directly from yoga.

We use a gentle three-part yogic breath, similar to the breathing we practice during Savasana.

Lie down comfortably and close your eyes.

Slowly inhale, allowing the breath to expand first into your belly, then your rib cage, and finally your chest.

Then slowly exhale, releasing the breath without forcing it.

Continue for a few minutes, allowing each breath to become softer and quieter.

Slow breathing can help the body shift toward relaxation and create a beautiful bridge between wakefulness and sleep.

We especially love the alpha state—the calm, eyes-closed state associated with alpha brain-wave activity of approximately 8–12 Hz. It's that peaceful space where you're still awake, but your thoughts begin to soften and the outside world feels further away.

Instead of trying to make yourself sleep, simply create the conditions that allow sleep to find you.

3. Magnesium Before Bed

Magnesium has become one of our favorite additions to an evening wellness routine.

It plays a role in normal muscle and nervous-system function, and we love incorporating it into the part of the evening when everything begins to slow down.

Think of it not as a magic solution for sleep, but as one small part of a larger ritual.

The lights become softer.

The phone goes away.

The body relaxes.

The day is coming to an end.

As with any supplement, choose what is appropriate for your individual health, diet, and medications.

4. Let Your Digestion Settle

A restful night begins before bedtime.

We prefer finishing heavier meals several hours before going to sleep rather than asking the body to digest a large meal while we're trying to rest.

If psyllium is part of your routine, we also prefer taking it earlier in the evening, with plenty of water, rather than immediately before lying down.

It's a simple idea: when your stomach feels calm and comfortable, it's easier for the rest of you to settle too.

5. Red Light Therapy

Red-light therapy is an absolute in·reach favorite.

A panel.

A red-light sauna.

A full-body capsule.

Research into red and near-infrared light for sleep is still developing, but emerging evidence is interesting. For us, though, there is another part of the ritual we love just as much.Story pin image

You become still.

The light is warm.

There is no phone in your hand.

No emails to answer.

Nothing to accomplish for a few minutes.

Sometimes wellness is about the technology.

And sometimes it's about finally giving yourself permission to stop.

6. Restorative Movement

Not every workout needs to make you sweat.

At night, we love the opposite.

Slow stretching.

Gentle mobility.

Longer holds.

Deep breathing.

Our in·reach Restorative Flow, available on our YouTube channel, was created for exactly these moments.

The intention isn't to achieve anything.

It's simply to release some of what your body has been carrying throughout the day.

Even ten quiet minutes can change the way you enter your bed.

7. Create a No-Blue-Light Hour

One of our favorite sleep rituals costs absolutely nothing.

Put your phone away at least one hour before bed.

No scrolling.

No emails.

No final check of everything happening in the world.

Swap the screen for something slower.

A book.

Your journal.

A conversation.

A little movement.

The point isn't to create another strict rule. It's to give your mind a chance to stop consuming before you ask it to rest.

8. Put Tomorrow on Paper

Sometimes your body is ready to sleep while your mind is still organizing tomorrow.

Send that email.

Book that appointment.

Don't forget that meeting.

Instead of asking your brain to hold onto everything overnight, put it somewhere else.

Keep a journal beside your bed and write down anything you need to remember tomorrow.

Once it's on paper, you don't need to keep mentally rehearsing it.

You've given tomorrow somewhere to live.

Tonight can belong to you.

9. Clear the Day Before You Rest

Water is one of our favorite ways to transition from the outside world back into our inner one.

An evening shower can become more than part of your routine.

Let the water wash away the day—the places you've been, the conversations you've had, the thoughts you've carried, and any energy you don't want to take into the night.

Then prepare your space with the same intention.

We love burning Palo Santo in the bedroom as a simple ritual for refreshing the atmosphere and marking the transition into rest. Open a window for a moment, clear the space, enjoy the scent, and always extinguish it completely before going to sleep.

Then comes skincare.

Slowly.

Intentionally.

Not another task to complete, but a few minutes devoted entirely to taking care of yourself.

Sometimes an evening ritual can be as simple as water, a beautiful scent, clean skin, fresh sheets, and the feeling that today is complete.

10. Make Your Bedroom a Place for Sleep

We love sleeping in a cold, completely dark room.

Blackout curtains.

No unnecessary light.

Earplugs when the world outside isn't quite as quiet as we'd like.

And a silky sleep mask—we especially love Dore & Rose.

Then, the finishing touch: a beautifully comfortable, slightly heavier blanket.

There is something deeply calming about the gentle pressure and cocooned feeling of a heavier blanket. It can feel almost like being held or hugged—the kind of physical comfort that makes you naturally want to soften into the bed.

Your bedroom doesn't need to look like a five-star wellness retreat.

It simply needs to feel like somewhere your body understands it can completely let go.

The Simplest Wellness Tool Is Already Within Reach

Wellness can become unnecessarily complicated.

Sometimes we don't need another hack.

We need to return to the basics.

Sleep enough.

Breathe slowly.

Move gently.

Put the phone away.

Take care of your body.

Write down what's occupying your mind.

Create darkness.

Create quiet.

And allow yourself to rest.

At in·reach, we believe that taking care of yourself is one of the greatest resources you have.

Because everything you want to experience, love, build, and create happens through the body you're living in.

Take care of it.

Give it movement when it needs movement.

Stillness when it needs stillness.

And rest when it asks for rest.

Because the best wellness practices don't always require us to search very far.

Often, the best things in life are the simplest ones.

And they're already within reach.
